A first-year student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) won $12,000 playing casino solitaire on her laptop for a period of two months.

The 20-year-old told reporters that she was originally just playing for fun, but then decided to start betting small amounts of money on each game in order to make the experience more exciting.

"At first it was just for fun, but then I started winning a bit and thought, why not keep going?" she said.

The student said she plans to use the money to pay for her tuition and other expenses.
